Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Charles Hinga, was a guest speaker at the SUPKEM Annual General Meeting, held under the theme “Navigating the Unfolding Future: Unifying the Ummah for Strategic Development, Social Cohesion and Governance Participation.”
Presenting the September 2026 Affordable Housing Program update, he highlighted 11,437 completed housing units, 303,910 ongoing units across 1,186 sites, over 1 million direct and indirect jobs, and 1.31 million Kenyans registered on Boma Yangu.
The discussion explored Section 51 of the Affordable Housing Act, Regulation 29 on savings returns, and the potential for Affordable Housing Board financing of up to KSh 4 million to support house construction for landowners, with flexible repayment arrangements. Key considerations include clear regulatory guidelines, Takaful protection under Regulation 5(2), and an independent Shariah certification framework to strengthen compliance, transparency and public confidence.
The programme also supports Jua Kali artisans and MSMEs, promotes local manufacturing and advances urban regeneration, demonstrating the links between affordable housing, economic empowerment and inclusive national development.
