Organizational Background
BACKGROUND
The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (the SUPKEM) is registered as the umbrella body of all Muslim organizations, societies, Mosque committees and groups in Kenya. It was formed in 1973 following a General Conference held at Qur'an House, Mfangano Street in Nairobi. The Council’s governance, management and operations are guided by a constitution which gives it the mandate to represent and co-ordinate programmes of its member organizations and assist in the activities and aspirations of the Muslim community in Kenya.
SUPKEM has been focusing on building the capacity of its member organizations to respond to the challenges which informed their formation and also to provide a viable platform for Muslim citizens in Kenya not only to voice their issues and concern, but provide space for the pursuit of viable solutions to the myriad challenges that have faced Muslims since independence.
SUPKEM has also been directly implementing various programmes tailored to address challenges unique to different regions and localities in Kenya. Responding to emergencies in Muslim majority areas including in North Eastern, Upper Eastern and northern Kenya, has been a persistent feature of its work. The current portfolio of programmes implemented by SUPKEM across the country include: Countering Violent Extremism (CVE), Health Programs and Civic Education Programs.
